This replacement building is dreadful it would be a travesty if Three Rivers allowed this monstrosity to be built. It does absolutely nothing for the street scene and takes away the character from this part of Rickmansworth.

the most ugly looking prison block... oh sorry i mean flats! do they think the placing of the large bush/tree helps to make it all better and less visible?! if greene king really want to sell, it should be to another hotel chain that could make the long island the nice modern hotel it should be with a little care and attention.... not to developers with no respect for rickmansworth town or the residents living in it. not to mention the loss of jobs to those currently working at the long island now. the council MUST say no!! on Have you seen this Artist's Impression of the proposed development?

An outstanding re-interpretation of a soviet era municipal housing scheme - obviously this design is a complete fit with the Victorian and Arts and Crafts properties within the adjacent conservation area... NOT. It must NOT be allowed. on Have you seen this Artist's Impression of the proposed development?

Long Island is a horrible structure and a stain on our community. Have you seen the fights which spill out of it on a Friday or Saturday? Or read the reviews of the hotel on Trip Advisor? I used to eat there as a child in the 90's but now wouldn't dream of stepping over the threshold.

I'd be delighted to see the ugly hotel block be pulled down.

Comments have been recorded before as to the ugliness of proposed developments but it seems that profitability of developers is the main reason irrespective of the consequences of the area and its residents. Such a development not only deprives the residents of the only Hotel close by but will create havok for the traffic in the cul-de-sac and for the residents of The Drive, Spencer Walk & Lynwood heights.
Sanity should prevail and such development should never be entertained.

What I want to know is this: If the Long Island is doing so well, why does Greene King want to sell?
I have lived in Ricky for 32 years and we used to eat there quite often. It's now awful, with no atmosphere and we would never go there for a meal now

Although I think the hotel currenty is a state, its an essential part of Rickamsnworth.

I have family visit five or six times a year, they do not drive and i only have a one bedroom flat so they stay in the hotel. Should the hotel close, they would have to stay in Watford!

I feel the current owners are just running it into the ground, horrible room, poor staff and club nights that attract fights every weekend. I think this is DELIBERATE to that the community will back the place being knocked down.

What i dont understand is why they are doing this? The hotel is always near full, the location is FANTASTIC! You have the choice of countryside in the Chilterns, Wembley Stadium within 30 mins and London within 25 mins! Why are they not utilising this to attract new business??

I would like to see someone take over the hotel who will put time and effort into it, refurbish the rooms, get rid of the club night and make it into something that will attract current and new business.

I use the Long Island regularly as an ex-resident of Rickmansworth who now lives in Cumbria. As Rickmansworth's only hotel, it would be a shame to see it go. The economic impact on the town would be considerable as well.

As someone who works in tourism, I can confirm that visitors spend far more freely than residents and I'm sure that restaurants and pubs would notice the difference.

Much has been said about Long Island , including reports of the Council trying to obtain
protected status and being too late (??????) , but make no mistake , heritage has once
again been sold down the river under the banner of commercial interests .
Throw-away remarks have been made regarding alterations to the original structure ,but if
you look at images of the former Victoria Hotel ,the changes are not really that significant.
This is merely another ploy to legitimise the carnage now inflicted by the bulldozer .
All too often in these circumstances the people who are in a position to make a difference
fail in their responsibilities to recognise just how important being a custodian of heritage is to the community. Our present is inextricably linked to our past , and we all
have a vital role to play vis-a-vis future generations.

R.I.P Long Island - now gone, but never to be forgotten by all those who care about our
community (yes, there are still some of us left!).
